Bethany Hamilton is a surfer who is known for a horrible accident which resulted in losing her left arm as a result of her encounter with a shark. Bethany was born in 1990 in the Hawaii, where she grew up alongside her parents and two brothers. Surfing has been her hobby since her very early age, and she used to tale part in a large number of competitions as a child. She won her first competition when she was only 8 years old, and she used to spend a lot of time training and enjoying the sea water. She was home schooled. The notorious accident happened in 2003, when Bethany was 13 years old. One day she went to surf with her friend Alana. While Hamilton was lying on her surfing board, a large tiger shark attached her and bit off her arm slightly below the shoulder. Alana took Bethany to the beach and the rescue stuff assisted her to the hospital where she was successfully operated after losing almost 60 per cent of her blood. To the greatest surprise and admiration, Bethany Hamilton continued competitive surfing and returned in just a month. She is using a custom made board which is slightly thicker than usual ones. When she was 23, she got married to her long time boyfriend Adam Dirks with whom she is a mum of three sons. In the late 2023 they became parents for the 4th time, and this time their lovely daughter came to this world.
