Pope Leo XIII is among the most prominent and active Bishops of Rome who was the leader of the Catholic Church for 25 years in the late XIXth - the early XXth century. He was born Gioacchino Vincenzo Rafael Luigi Pecci in 1810 in Rome and was raised in a large traditional Catholic family alongside his six siblings. He was a good and diligent student as a child and wrote poems. He wanted to become a priest inspired by the career of his elder brother Giuseppe. In the late 1830s he was ordained a priest and made a personal prelade by the current Pope Gregory XVI. Later on he was appointed as a Apostolic Nuncio of Belgium and in the mid 1840s became papal Assistant. For three decades before becoming the Pope Recci worked as an Archbishop of Peruggia, and in the early 1878 he was elected the Head of the Catholic Church. He would focus his activities as the Pope on involving and attempting to improve working and social life of the people, promoting the ideas of enlightenment and education. Pope Leo XIII contributed greatly in the development of philosophical thought, improving social justice and social doctrines, as well as some specific theological innovations and reformations.
