Wesley So is the most successful Philippine chess player and a grandmaster who managed to peak as No 2 chess player in the world, according to FIDE ratings in spring 2017. He was born in the Philippines in 1993 and started playing chess in serious competitions when he was 9 years old. In 2003 he managed to win the National Junior Chess Tournament, and two years later he became the 4th in the World Youth Chess Championship. In 2008 So became the youngest chess player to pass 2600 rating thus breaking the record of Magnus Carlsen. In 2014 So moved to the US and started living there, though still representing the Philippine team for some short time before his transfer to the US team. In 2016 he represented the US team in the Chess Olympics and managed to win the gold both individual and team. In 2017 he was rated No 2 but currently, Wesley So is rated the 7th by FIDE.
