Victor Willis was an American singer, songwriter, actor, and the lead vocalist and founding member of the legendary disco group Village People. He was born in 1951 in Dallas, he grew up in San Francisco, where he began singing in his father’s Baptist church and performed with a teenage group that once opened for The Temptations. Willis moved to New York to study musical theater and later performed in Broadway shows, including The Wiz.

In 1977, Willis joined producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo to create the Village People, and he quickly emerged as the group's unmistakable frontman. Performing in the iconic police officer or naval officer costume, he co-wrote and sang lead on some of disco’s biggest anthems, including Y.M.C.A., Macho Man, In the Navy, and Go West.
