Kevin Gates is an American musician and rapper with a distinctive hip hop style and strong lyrical storytelling. He was born Kevin Jerome Gilyard in 1986 in Louisiana and was raised in Baton Rouge. His parents were of Puerto Rican and Moroccan descent, and the early inspiration came to Gates from the local music around. He began to rap seriously in his early twenties, and his first professional mixtapes came out in the late 2000s, helping him to be noticed quickly in the regional hip hop scene.
