She was born in 1933 as Maria de Montserrat Viviana Concepción Caballé I Folch in Barcelona, where she grew up and studied music. Her professional career started in Switzerland, where Montserrat used to learn singing the music of Mozart, Strauss, and other European composers (which is not common for Spanish opera singers). She continued in Germany and then in the early 1960s, she moved back to Portugal and Barcelona, where she began starring in the Gran Teatre del Liceu. With the theater, she toured a lot and visited many countries of the world, which made her popular and known. One of the best performances of her was on the stage of the Carnegie Hall in 1965, where she performed in Lucrecia Borgia by Donizetti.
