His real name is Herbert Butros Khaury and he was born in 1932 in New York City, where his deep interest in early American popular music emerged. As a teenager, he spent years studying and collecting old recordings.

In 1968 he became a national sensation with his version of Tiptoe Through the Tulips, which became his signature song. His unusual looks, high-pitched singing style and love of vintage music made him a memorable figure on the television scene in the late 1960s.
