An American actress and producer, Ellen Pompeo is highly respected for her long-running role in the series Grey's Anatomy. She was born the youngest of six children in Massachusetts in 1969. She had a difficult childhood, losing her mother at the age of five and working hard to get an education as she grew up.

She began modeling and acting in the mid-1990s, after meeting fashion photographer Andrew Rosenthal, who also photographed. Before long she was appearing in advertisements and commercials.
