Ellis Marsalis Jr. was a legendary American jazz pianist, educator, and composer whose career spanned nearly seven decades and left a lasting mark on the history of jazz. He was born in 1934 in New Orleans and began playing the piano at the age of 10. In his early teens, he also learned the saxophone and started performing at local clubs and venues in the early 1950s.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Marsalis spent much of his time teaching, directing a new generation of musicians, and writing poetry and articles on music and the arts. Later he resumed active performing, especially in the last decades of the twentieth century, when he played extensively with his family band that included his sons.

Marsalis released around 20 studio albums in his life, and was greatly admired for his collaborations with top jazz artists like Marcus Roberts, Eddie Harris and others.
