Mitski is an American rock singer and songwriter of Japanese descent, widely admired for her distinctive voice and emotional depth. She was born Mitsuki Laycock in 1990 in the United States to an American father and a Japanese mother. Because of her father’s work, Mitski spent much of her childhood living in various countries around the world, including Turkey and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

She studied musical composition in college and later joined several bands as a lead vocalist, experimenting with a wide range of styles from heavy metal to indie rock.
