An outstanding British and American actor, filmmaker, and stage performer, Sir Anthony Hopkins is among those superstars whose career spans more than six decades. Born in 1937 in Wales, he came into a middle-class family and showed early creative talent, entertaining school friends by imitating teachers. Young Hopkins developed a great passion for music, especially playing the piano, which still remains an important part of his life. At the age of 16, he joined the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama; he graduated in 1957. He later continued his professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. In the late 1960s, Hopkins transitioned from celebrated years of stage work to screen work, appearing in films such as The Lion in Winter, Hamlet and Uncle Vanya, and the television adaptation of War and Peace.

In the 1970s and 1980s he gained a reputation for playing complex and emotionally intense characters in such projects as Magic, The Elephant Man, A Bridge Too Far, and The Good Father. In the early 1990s, he became an international star with his chilling performance as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, for which he won his first Academy Award. He got his second Oscar decades later for The Father, cementing his lasting brilliance. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993 for services to the arts, Anthony Hopkins lives in the USA and the UK. He is married for the third time, has a daughter, a musician, and is still active in music and charity work.
