Harriet Tubman was a social life and political activist known for her difficult life and plenty of work directed on promoting the ideas of slavery abolishment. She was born in 1820 in Maryland and spent her childhood in slavery, abuse and harassment. As a child, Tubman received a serious head trauma which affected her life and her appearance as well. When Harriet was 24, she got married to a free black man and a few years later Tubman with her two brothers managed to escape from slavery and settle down in Philadelphia. Having suffered all the hardships and tortures related to slavery, she decided to dedicated her life to saving people from it. First, she decided to rescue her extended family, and later on - many other people. Known with a nickname 'Moses', Tubman used to use a secret underground railroad and plenty of secret shelters in order to help slaves escape their owners. She was one of the opponents of The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and focused on helping black fugitives to get to the northern states and start their new life there. During the times of the Civil War, Tubman worked for the Union Forces, first as a cook and a nurse, and later on as a spy and even a field military leader. After the war had been over, Harriet Tubman lived in her flat in NYC where she looked after her family and continued her social activism. In the early 20th century her health problems started getting more and more serious, so she had to stay in a nursing home where she passed away in 1913, at the age of 93.
