Mark Knopfler is a celebrated songwriter, guitarist, and founding member of the band Dire Straits. Born in 1949 in Scotland and raised in Britain, he began playing the guitar in an unusual way. Although left-handed, he preferred holding the instrument as a right-handed player, which led him to develop a distinctive wrist position and a unique fingerpicking style.

In the late 1970s, Knopfler and his brother David founded Dire Straits. The band went on to release six studio albums and produce timeless hits such as Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, and many more. After the band split in the early 1990s, Knopfler pursued a solo career and collaborated with artists including Sting ("Money For Nothing"), Tina Turner ("Private Dancer"), Chet Atkins ("Poor Boy Blues").
